Keeping the lights on in Europe: why grid flexibility matters

Earlier this year, a single transmission line in Spain tripped—and within minutes, millions of people were without power. Flights were grounded, transport systems stalled, industries went dark. It was a stark reminder of just how fragile Europe’s energy system can be when volatility and electrification collide.

At Enlit Europe in — somewhat fittingly in Bilbao — that story came up again and again as a cautionary tale and a call to action.

This year, Teraloop had the privilege of attending Enlit in partnership with Arteche, whose global expertise in grid technologies has long helped underpin resilience across the energy sector. Together, we spent three days speaking with DSOs, TSOs, industrial operators and innovators who all shared a common message:

➡️ Europe needs fast, clean, high-cycling energy storage to keep the grid stable as renewables grow.

➡️ We need technologies that respond in milliseconds, not minutes.

➡️ And we need solutions that can be deployed where grid congestion and power-quality issues are already having real economic impact.

For us, it was energising to see flywheel technology moving to a recognised part of the future storage mix. With Arteche, we were able to show how Teraloop’s PowerLoop flywheel can provide instantaneous support—keeping frequency stable, smoothing renewables, and protecting industrial operations from costly disturbances.

The conversations we had in Bilbao were grounded in a shared realisation: Europe cannot afford another cascading blackout.

And the way forward requires collaboration—between established grid players like Arteche and new innovators like us.

If you’d like to continue the conversation—or explore partnership opportunities—let’s connect.
